Member Highlight: Joanne Papineau – Nature Canada

Joanne Papineau has been a proud member of Nature Canada because the Nineteen Eighties, and a month-to-month donor for greater than 20 years. 

As a baby, Joanne fell in love with nature, particularly the underwater world. She was impressed by the underwater discoveries and adventures of Jacques Cousteau, and at a younger age she advised herself “I’m going to be a marine biologist!” Her work has allowed her to discover her ardour for nature and conservation, particularly whales. “Underwater is my favorite place to be. If I had gills, I might simply keep there. It’s quiet, lovely, vibrant.”

Joanne has many nature tales to share, however one in all her most up-to-date experiences holds a particular place in her coronary heart. “I visited Antarctica a couple of years in the past, and as I sat down, a child penguin got here and pecked at my boots. I felt so privileged—we have been respecting their house and so they have been completely happy to share their setting with us. We have been a curiosity, however not a risk. It was a magical second of connection.”

And it’s this reference to nature and species that drives Joanne to be concerned with Nature Canada and keep knowledgeable on conservation points. “You don’t have to be a scientist to know the cycle of life. My membership is my solution to have a voice within the dialog, since animals and the setting can’t communicate for themselves. It’s our obligation to guard them, and I’m fiercely pleased with the work we’ve carried out, and hopeful in regards to the work we now have but to do. Selecting to provide month-to-month to Nature Canada was probably the greatest choices I’ve ever made.”
