This story of Jerry captures it all:
Jerry is a young man of about 33 years. He has graduated from the University and has a good job. He rented an apartment in the big city where he lives. His parents are rich. Shortly after his graduation, his father presents him with a good car with which he goes to work and moves around. At the end of each week, he takes his friends out to a place of relaxation to ease out the stress of the week’s work in his office. This has become a weekly routine. This he does with his friends whom he usually invites along with their girl friends. He on his part also comes along with one of his several female friends.
Money is never Jerry’s problem. He has a comfortable salary from his place of work. His mother who is a lawyer also supports him with additional money from time to time. For her, Jerry needs additional financial support, as she considers her son’s salary as not being adequate enough to enable him get over life’s cares.
Jerry has a bevy of ladies as his friends. Each time he takes his friends out to seek some fun in a hotel or some other place of relaxation, he decides on which of his many girl friends he would go out with. As a consequence of this, some of his friends and family members who see his lifestyle and who knows that money is not his problem often taunt him with questions of when he would be ready to pick a wife from his collection of young ladies and get married. He always replies with a smile and the answer: “very soon”.
The friends of Jerry who are very close to him are quick to tell whoever cares to ask that it is difficult for anyone to tell which of Jerry’s many girl friends he is likely to choose as a wife. This is because he exhibits the same attitude and shows the same degree of love to each of them. However, he has disclosed to his most trusted friend, Patrick, that he does not truly love any these girls and that whenever he intends to get married , he would look elsewhere.
Patrick is married and already has a child with his wife. He desires that his friend would also get married. He married when he was 29 years old and he is now 32 while his friend, Jerry remains a bachelor at 33 years.
There are some of Jerry’s ladies that Patrick sees as good ladies who would make good wives. He often mentions them to Jerry urging him to consider picking one of them as a wife. At this Jerry would always laugh the suggestion off. “What do you have against Amara?” Patrick would ask. “Oh, that one who believes that it is by throwing herself at me that she would get me. She never offers the least resistance whenever you make an advance to take her to bed.” “Ok, what of Bisi, what is wrong with her”, Patrick continues his pressure. “Ahhh! Bisi? Hmm! Don’t go there; that alcoholic! Have you not noticed how she drinks whenever we go out with her? Please don’t go there at all. ‘’But it is you that encourages her to drink like that’’, continues Patrick. “ Whenever you notice her glass empty, you would pick up the bottle of wine to pour in more’’. ‘’Ehh, what stops her from stopping me if she sees me trying to pour more wine? That girl is only good for the kitchen’’ “And for the other room’’, concludes Patrick with laughter.
If anyone tells Bisi that Jerry is not considering her for marriage, she would not agree. Whenever she pays Jerry a visit , he would behave as if she is the apple of his eye. He would carry her in his laps kissing and cuddling her like a baby. Each time it is her birthday, Jerry floods her with gifts of all kinds, including her choice wines and even spends extra money to sponsor a birthday party for her. How very deceptive some men can be!
