HAVANA, Cuba–Seated earlier than a machine that checks cigar high quality, Orquidea Gonzalez says she is proud to hold on the craft’s custom and contribute to an export business that has grown throughout the pandemic.
“I like making cigars. That is the place I’ve spent my life, and it is an artwork. Not everybody is aware of the way to make cigars, like not everybody is aware of the way to paint an image,” stated the 55-year-old manufacturing unit employee.
Her job is to measure in a steel tube the draw of every cigar to make sure that the smoker will get the right puff.
“If it is lower than 40, the (suction) degree is extreme; if it is greater than 80, it is too low,” she defined, her eyes glued to the machine’s needle.
